Propane is one of the safest, most reliable fuels you can use to power your home. But like any energy source, it comes with a few safety basics every Miami Valley homeowner should know. Knowing how to recognize the smell of a leak and what to do next can make all the difference for you and your family.
What Does a Propane Leak Smell Like?
Propane manufacturers add a distinct odorant to propane so leaks are easy to notice. Most people describe it as smelling like rotten eggs, a skunk, or sulfur. If you catch a whiff of this smell in or around your home, you should take it seriously right away.
What to Do if You Smell Gas
If you suspect a propane leak, follow these steps:
- NO FLAMES OR SPARKS. Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones. Flames or sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or a fire.
- LEAVE THE AREA IMMEDIATELY. Get everyone out of the building or area where you suspect gas is leaking.
- SHUT OFF THE GAS. Turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank if it is safe to do so. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise).
- REPORT THE LEAK. From a neighbor’s home or other nearby building away from the gas leak, call McMahan’s Bottle Gas right away at (937) 233-0831 or at (937) 274-9940. If you can’t reach us, call 911 or your local fire department.
- DO NOT RETURN TO THE BUILDING OR AREA until McMahan’s Bottle Gas, an emergency responder, or a qualified service technician determines that it is safe to do so.
- GET YOUR SYSTEM CHECKED. Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances, McMahan’s Bottle Gas or a qualified service technician must check your entire system to ensure that it is leak-free.
These steps are designed to keep you and your loved ones safe while getting the problem resolved quickly.
Tips to Help Reduce the Risk of a Leak
Most propane leaks are preventable with a bit of routine care. Here are a few ways to lower your risk:
- Schedule regular inspections of your tank, lines, and appliances.
- Store propane cylinders upright, outdoors, and away from direct heat or enclosed spaces.
- Sign up for automatic delivery so your tank stays properly filled and monitored.
- Use a programmable thermostat to reduce strain on your system and keep it running efficiently.
- Keep the area around your tank clear of debris, leaves, and overgrown landscaping.
A little maintenance goes a long way toward keeping your propane system safe and dependable throughout the year.
